Thomas Jefferson Engagement Session
So thankful to Ari & Andrew for their kindness and patience during this session! For the first time in a long time, I whipped out my 35mm film camera to try and shoot a couple rolls of film, and they were so patient while I was fiddling around with focus and lighting!
A little bit of backstory, Andrew and I met many, many moons ago as he went to middle/high school with a very good family friend. We’d bop around the beach together in the summer or spend days in Annapolis doing who knows what. But then we didn’t see each other for a really long time. And then, somehow, we were reconnected online!
I had reached out to Andrew at one point a year or longer ago to see if he and his boyfriend at the time would be interested in a photo session around DC. Due to scheduling we never made it happen at the time – but we were joking that maybe if we did a photoshoot, his boyfriend (Ari, who I hadn’t met yet), would finally propose!
About 6 months later, I saw that they got engaged at the Thomas Jefferson Memorial! So, so exciting!
We finally connected about doing a session and I got to meet Ari, see Andrew for the first time in a long time, and learn about their life together. It’s really awesome that I’m able to use my photography to reconnect with people – it makes me really happy.
Anyways, one of my favorite things that we talked about during their session was the fact that Andrew and Ari had to figure out a proposal. When you’re in a same-sex relationship, there’s really no protocol for how the proposal goes down! Ari planned the proposal and he even bought two rings – one for Andrew and one for himself!
