Couples Beach Session Tips

Whether you’re newly engaged, celebrating an anniversary, or just want beautiful photos of the two of you — a beach session along the Delaware coast is one of my absolute favorite things to photograph. There’s something about the open sky, the salt air, and the soft light at Bethany Beach and Fenwick Island that brings out something really genuine in couples.

But I also know that “just act natural” is way easier said than done when someone’s pointing a camera at you. So I put together this guide — full of my most practical, honest advice — to help you feel like yourselves from the moment you step onto the sand.

Before Your Session: A Few Things Worth Knowing

You don’t have to be “photogenic.” I hear this all the time — “We’re not good in front of cameras.” Here’s the truth: no one is, at first. My job is to ease you into it so naturally that you forget I’m there. Give it ten minutes, and I promise things will start to feel normal.

Talk to each other, not the camera. The best couples photos happen when you’re focused on your person, not on performing for the lens. I’ll give you prompts and things to do that feel natural — small moments, not stiff poses.

Think about what you actually want. Do you want something romantic and dreamy? Playful and fun? A mix? It helps to have a vague sense of the mood you’re going for so I can tailor the session. There are no wrong answers.

What to Bring to Your Couples Session

Less is more here — but a few things are worth having.

A small touch-up kit. Wind and sun work fast on the Delaware shoreline. A lip balm, a small mirror, and a few bobby pins will cover most situations. I’ll always flag if something’s off before I shoot.

Comfortable shoes to walk in — and maybe no shoes at all. Most couples end up barefoot at some point during a beach session, and it always looks beautiful. Bring shoes you can easily slip off. Avoid heels in sand unless you love a workout.

A prop if it means something to you. A bottle of wine, a meaningful piece of jewelry, a picnic blanket — if something represents your relationship, bring it. We’ll work it in naturally.

What to Wear for Your Bethany Beach or Fenwick Island Couples Session

Outfit choices have a bigger impact on your photos than most people realize — so here’s my straightforward guidance:

Complement each other, but don’t match. Coordinated outfits look intentional and polished; identical outfits look like a costume. Choose a shared color palette and let your individual styles show within it.

Embrace the Delaware coast palette. Soft whites, creams, dusty blues, sage, blush, warm tans, and muted earth tones all photograph beautifully against the open sky and shoreline. Avoid neons, stark white (it blows out in direct sun), and busy patterns that compete for attention.

Dress for comfort and movement. Flowy dresses, linen shirts, relaxed trousers — clothing that moves well, photographs well. If you can’t easily hug, walk hand-in-hand, or spin around in it, reconsider.

Skip the logos. Clean, simple silhouettes are timeless. Logos and graphics date quickly and draw the eye away from you.

Consider a second outfit. If your session is longer or you want variety in your gallery, a casual/relaxed look plus something a little more dressed-up gives you range. I’m happy to advise on this during our pre-session chat.

Day-Of Tips for a Relaxed, Beautiful Session

Arrive a few minutes early. Take a walk, take in the view, shake off any nerves. The Delaware coastline at golden hour has a way of doing that naturally — but give yourself a few minutes to settle in.

Eat beforehand. This sounds obvious, but I’ve had couples arrive hungry and distracted. Enjoy a meal or snack before we meet, so you feel good and present.

Put your phones away. Once we start, let yourselves be fully in it. The photos will be better, and so will the experience.

Let me lead, then forget I’m there. I’ll give you direction — where to stand, what to do with your hands, how to move. After a few minutes, I’ll step back and let things unfold naturally. That’s usually when the magic happens.

Why I Recommend Golden Hour for Delaware Beach Sessions

Most of my couples sessions along the Bethany Beach and Fenwick Island shoreline are scheduled during golden hour — the 60–90 minutes before sunset. The light at that time is warm, soft, and flattering in a way that midday sun simply isn’t. It also tends to be less crowded, which means more of the beach to ourselves.

I’ll send you exact timing based on your session date so you know precisely when to arrive. Sessions typically run 60–90 minutes, which is plenty of time to capture a full range of moments without anyone feeling rushed or exhausted.
