Some sessions just have everything. Golden light. A full house of people who genuinely like each other. Little ones who start out skeptical of the camera and end up completely feral in the best possible way. And a stretch of the Delaware coast that looks like it was made for family portraits.

This Fenwick Island sunset session was exactly that.

The Baldwin family came to me for a Signature Session – my middle-tier, most popular session designed for larger family groups who want more time, more variety, and more of those in-between moments that you can’t really plan for. 3 generations, 3 little ones, and one really beautiful evening on the coast. Following the Light: Dunes to Ocean’s Edge

One of my favorite things about a coastal Delaware sunset session is that the light tells you where to go if you know how to read it.

We started up in the dunes.

Early in golden hour, the dunes offer something the open beach can’t: warm, directional light filtering through the sea grass, with the beach houses of Fenwick Island softening into the background. It’s flattering for larger groups because the light wraps rather than flattens, and the environment naturally encourages people to relax. There’s less of a “line everyone up” energy in the dunes, and that looseness absolutely shows up in the photos.

As the sun dropped lower, we moved toward the water. That transition is intentional. Once the sun gets close to the horizon, you want open sky behind you – the ocean becomes a giant reflector, bouncing warm pink and gold light back onto everyone’s faces. The wide-open beach also gives you room to spread out and capture the full group in a way the dunes don’t always allow.

By the time we were shooting at the water’s edge, the sky had gone full pastel – that particular coastal Delaware pink you really can’t manufacture in post. You just have to be there at the right moment. And we were.

Getting the Kids to Actually Be Themselves

Here’s the truth about photographing kids at big family gatherings: the more adults tell them to smile, the less they will.

My approach is pretty simple – first, I try to get on their level and calmly interact with them. I introduce myself, I ask their name, how old they are, what their favorite color is, and then something specific like – I like the dinosaurs on your shoes or do you love to dance or can you touch your toes. Just something silly for them to realize I am safe and goofy.

Then, I mostly ignore them. I let them get used to me being around while I’m directing the adults and older family members. By the time I turn the camera their way, I’m not a stranger shoving a big camera in their face anymore, I’m just that person who’s been hanging out on the beach with their family.

From there it’s a lot of movement. I’m not asking kids to stand still and look at me for too long, I’m asking them to run to grandma, or show me how fast they can spin, or see if they can make their dad laugh. The real expressions live inside the action, not before it. And once one kid loosens up, the rest follow pretty fast.

The images of the little ones in this gallery? Those aren’t posed. Those are just what happens when kids forget there’s a camera.

If you’re planning a family beach trip and want to coordinate photos, I’d recommend reaching out as soon as you have your travel dates, even if they’re still tentative. Securing your date early is the most important step.

What should a large family wear for beach photos?

For multigenerational groups, I recommend picking one or two anchor colors and letting everyone coordinate loosely around them – think navy, white, and chambray, or soft blues and sandy neutrals. You don’t want everyone in identical outfits, but you do want the group to feel cohesive. Avoid bright neon, heavy logos, or very busy patterns, which can compete with the light and the setting.

How do you handle big groups with multiple generations?

I break it down. We’ll do the full group, then I pull out smaller units – grandparents alone, each nuclear family, just the grandkids, any special photos. What’s the best time of year for sunset family photos at Fenwick Island?

Late summer and early fall are my absolute favorite – typically August through October. The crowds start to thin, the light is stunning, and the temperature is comfortable enough that nobody is melting on the beach. Summer sessions are beautiful too, but you’ll want to book early.
