What to Wear to Your Beach Maternity Session

Figuring out what to wear to a maternity session can feel like way too much pressure – something to hyperfixate on for days on end. You’re already growing a whole human. The last thing you need is wardrobe stress.

Good news: you don’t need a perfectly curated closet or a Pinterest board with 47 pins. You just need a few guiding principles and I’ve got you covered.

Here’s everything I tell my clients when they ask the most common question I get: “What should I wear?”

Start with How You Want to Feel

Before you think about colors or fabrics, think about the vibe.

  • Do you want to feel soft and romantic?
  • Bold and radiant?
  • Relaxed and real?

The beach is a gorgeous backdrop, and your outfit can sets the whole emotional tone of your gallery. Come back to that feeling when you’re choosing – it’ll make the decision so much easier.

Flowy Is Your Best Friend

The Delaware coast is breezy, beautiful, and a little unpredictable – and honestly? That works in your favor. Fabric that moves in the wind photographs incredibly well. Think flowy maxi dresses, chiffon wraps, linen co-ords, or a long skirt you can let the breeze catch.

Fitted, structured pieces can look great too, but they tend to read very differently on camera. A form-fitting bodysuit or a stretchy maternity gown that hugs your bump is absolutely stunning – just pair it with something that gives the image a little movement.

Embrace Your Bump

This is not the time to hide it. I know – easier said than done, especially if you’re still getting used to this new body. But I promise you: when you get your images back, you will be so glad you showed it off. You growing a whole-a** human is the whole point! Look for dresses with ruching at the belly, wrap-style silhouettes, or open-front kimono pieces that frame it beautifully.

Stretchy jersey, soft knit, and chiffon all photograph well and are comfortable for moving around on sand and in surf.

Color & Palette: What Actually Works on the Beach

The Delaware coast has a natural palette – sandy neutrals, blue-grey water, golden light. Here’s what tends to photograph beautifully:

Great choices:

  • Soft, muted tones: dusty rose, sage green, warm cream, caramel, terracotta
  • Deep, rich hues: navy, forest green, burgundy, chocolate brown
  • Classic white or off-white (stunning against the sand, especially at golden hour)

What to avoid:

  • Neon or very saturated colors – they tend to fight with the scenery and the light
  • Busy patterns and small prints – they can be distracting and don’t always compress well in photos
  • Exact-matching outfits if you’re including a partner – try coordinating instead (think: same color family, complementary tones)

You Don’t Have to Show More than You’re Comfortable With

A lot of maternity clients I work with aren’t sure how much skin they want to show – and that’s totally okay. You don’t need to go full goddess-in-the-waves to have stunning photos. A beautiful boho maxi with a cardigan over it? Gorgeous. A flowy dress that doesn’t show your belly at all, but photographs like a dream? Absolutely.

Your comfort level matters. If you feel self-conscious or uncomfortable, that shows up in your images. Wear something that makes you feel good – whatever that means for you.

Think About the Bottom Half

Sand is soft, the water is unexpected, and you’ll be moving around – kneeling, sitting, walking the shoreline. Long dresses are stunning but can get heavy if they’re dragging through surf. If you’re planning any water shots, a shorter hemline or a lightweight chiffon that won’t weigh you down is a smart call.

Bare feet on the beach look natural and beautiful, and sandals that slip on and off easily are your best bet for everything in between.

Accessories & Details

A few small things that go a long way:

Do:

  • delicate jewelry
  • a simple second layer (a chambray or denim top, a cardigan, a shacket)
  • a wide-brimmed hat if that’s your style

Skip:

  • chunky statement jewelry
  • anything that pulls attention away from your face and/or belly
  • anything to too toooo trendy

Hair-wise, loose waves or a soft updo tend to photograph beautifully in the coastal breeze. Tight ponytails and top knots can look great too, but styles that move with the wind have a certain magic about them.

What About a Second Look?

If you want two outfits – yes, do it! A lot of clients bring a change, and it’s a great way to get variety in your gallery. Think about contrast: one flowing dress and one more fitted look, or one white and one color. Even bringing a cozy oversized sweater to throw over your dress for a few frames adds something special and personal.

When in Doubt, Ask

Seriously – this is part of what I’m here for. Once you book your session, I’m always happy to look at what you’re considering and give you honest feedback. I want you to feel amazing on the day of your shoot, and sometimes a second opinion from someone who spends a lot of time on this beach is exactly what you need.

You’re going to be stunning. I can’t wait to photograph this season of your life.
