Dewey Beach Maternity Photography | Sunrise Session on the Delaware Shore

If you’re looking for proof that a Delaware beach maternity session can be absolutely magical, I give you Alex and Josh.

Soft morning light. The Atlantic just waking up. A fluffy white dog named Stanley trotting across the sand. A mama-to-be glowing in the most beautiful blush pink dress. This Dewey Beach maternity photography session is everything.

What Is a Dewey Beach Maternity Session Like?

Dewey Beach sits right on the Delaware shore between Rehoboth and the Indian River Inlet — and at sunrise, it is quiet. The crowds are gone, the light is golden and gentle, and the whole beach feels like it belongs to just you.

For maternity photography in Delaware, that early morning window is everything. The soft, diffused light wraps around a baby bump in a way that no afternoon session can replicate. It’s flattering, it’s dreamy, and it photographs beautifully.

For Alex and Josh’s session, we started about 45 minutes before sunrise and wrapped up as the sun climbed above the horizon. The result? Warm, airy images that feel timeless — exactly what you want when you’re documenting one of the biggest chapters of your life.

Meet Alex, Josh & Stanley

Alex is one of my favorite humans – she’s an incredible wedding planner (seriously, if you need one, she’s your person), and I’d had the joy of photographing her and Josh before. So walking onto the beach with them felt like reuniting with old friends.

And then there’s Stanley, named after the Stanley Cup, because of course he is. Stanley is a fluffy white dream of a dog who was surprisingly cooperative for a beach photo shoot, which I appreciated deeply.

A few weeks after this session, Alex and Josh welcomed their healthy baby boy. I don’t think it gets much sweeter than that.

Frequently Asked Questions About Maternity Photography

When should I book a maternity session?

Most photographers – including me – recommend booking your maternity session between 28 and 36 weeks of pregnancy. You want the bump to be beautifully round and prominent, but you also want to be comfortable enough to walk the beach and enjoy the experience. Earlier in that window is ideal for active, beach-side sessions.

What should I wear for a beach maternity session?

Think soft, flowy fabrics in neutral or pastel tones. Alex wore a blush pink dress that photographed beautifully against the pale sand and blue-green water – it’s a classic Delaware beach look for a reason. Avoid busy patterns or bright neon colors, which can distract from the subject (you and that bump!). Your partner should complement your outfit rather than match exactly – think coordinating tones, not uniforms.

What time of day is best for beach maternity photography?

Sunrise is hands-down my favorite time to shoot maternity sessions on the Delaware shore. The light is soft and golden, the beach is empty, and the temperature is comfortable – especially important in summer. Sunset sessions are also beautiful, but sunrise offers a quieter, more intimate atmosphere that I love for maternity and couples work.

Can I bring my dog to a maternity session?

Absolutely – and I highly encourage it! Pets are part of the family, and including them adds personality and joy to the gallery. The key is to have a plan: bring a helper who can hold the leash between shots, and don’t stress if your dog is a little wild. Stanley was a champ, but even the chaotic moments make for great photos.

Where do you shoot maternity sessions in Delaware?

I photograph maternity sessions along the entire Delaware shore, including Dewey Beach, Bethany Beach, Fenwick Island, and Rehoboth Beach. Each location has its own character – Dewey has a wide, open stretch of beach that’s especially beautiful at sunrise, while Fenwick and Bethany offer a quieter, more low-key vibe. I’m happy to recommend the best fit for your vision.

Why Choose a Delaware Beach Photographer for Your Maternity Session?

There’s no shortage of photographers out there, but maternity photography in Delaware is a little different from an in-studio session or an urban shoot. It requires knowing the tides, the light, and the logistics of working on the sand with a pregnant client.

I’ve photographed many, many sessions along the Delaware shore – from Fenwick Island all the way up to Rehoboth – and I bring all of that experience to every session. I know which stretches of beach photograph best at what time of day, how to read the morning light, and how to help you feel relaxed and natural in front of the camera (even if you’ve never had professional photos taken before).

Most importantly, I know how fast this season goes. A maternity session isn’t just photographs, it’s documentation. It’s proof that this chapter happened, that you glowed, that your partner looked at you like that, that Stanley was there.
